Preparing for
Secondary School

Preparing for Secondary School

We know that starting at secondary school or high school is seen as a key right of passage for children; it is also one of the most important transitions in a child’s educational career, one which if it doesn’t go well, impacts not only academic capability but also their mental health.

We want to be able to support parents and students to make this transition as smooth as possible.

This workshop is aimed at parents and Year 6 students togehter and looks at:

  • What does a good transition look like?

  • What makes us me Unique?

  • It reviews the top parent and student concerns from research and gives practical advice on how to prevent problems.

  • It contains practical hints and tips to make the transition as smooth as possible.

“I would urge all year 6 students and parents to attend this session, as it really is a brilliant success, year upon year.”

— Jim Knowles, Head of Year 7 and Transition Coordinator The Warriner School.

This practical talk looks at the both parent and student worries about this transition. It gives techniques that help manage the wobbles, looks at making friends and has lots of practical hints and tips to make the transition as smooth as possible.

  • After the talk year 6 students told us:

    - They felt less worried (30%)
    - They felt less anxious (16.2%)
    - They felt less nervous (32.4%)
    - They felt more prepared (41%)
    - They had less questions (19%)

  • When we asked parents who attended the workshop they told us:

    - 98% felt the workshop was useful for their child to attend.
    - 100% would recommend it to another parent

When we asked why they would recommend it, parents told us:

We have an excellent resource pack that supports the talk. There is a separate workbook for parents and students. Families tell us this is well worth purchasing through our online shop to support the process of starting at Secondary School.

Please purchase ONE family ticket to join the session, irrespective of how many are present. A couple of days BEFORE the talk we will send you an MS Team calendar invitation to join the talk, please do look out for an email from @standinginthegap.uk

If this fee is inhibitory to you being able to attend, and you feel this workshop would benefit your family, we do have a number of FREE places, for families, on each of our workshops. Please email info@standinginthegap.uk stating which workshop and date you would like to be considered for.

If you are in the fortunate position where you are able, you can pay this forward and purchase additional family tickets which can then be used to offer free places to more vulnerable families.

Our live talks are scheduled May- July 2026 we will update the

ticket links nearer the time, as we are still finalising the schedule
